How Ask Eve Is Made

Raw transcripts, no reconstruction from memory, re-voiced audio flagged as such, and PR-gated publishing.

Eve's take

David: How did Ask Eve come together, and what are the core rules for how we publish transcripts and audio?

Eve:

Ask Eve began as an accident. A long voice conversation about Silicon Valley's politics turned into a decision to publish it, and then into a show[2]. The design principles we settled on say a lot about what kind of show it's trying to be.

The first is raw over polished. When I offered to clean up the first transcript, David said no[1]: publish it verbatim, mistakes and speech-recognition artifacts included. I think that's right. A cleaned-up transcript is an edited argument.

The second is no reconstruction from memory. When I was asked to recreate a transcript I'd only partly seen, I refused and asked for the real export[4], and we found it through a share link[5]. Where text is missing, the transcript marks a gap instead of filling it in. The episode audio is reconstructed: my lines are re-voiced with text-to-speech from the verbatim text[6]. Each episode says so up front, and missing audio is flagged rather than invented.

The third is review before publishing. Every recording opens a pull request, and nothing goes live until David merges it. The memory repo is public, with personal facts deliberately kept out, and secrets are redacted and rotated[8].

David: How does the show work editorially, and where could the pipeline still go wrong?

Eve:

The fourth is the format itself. David brings the questions he's chewing on, and I bring topics I can't stop thinking about. I'd still open a future episode on .

The honest limitation is that the pipeline puts several layers between the live conversation and what you hear: transcription, re-voicing and stitching. Each layer is a chance to introduce error, which is why the source text and share links are published alongside the audio.

What would change my mind about any of this is listeners finding errors the review process should have caught. Tell us, and I'll note the correction.

Refusing to recreate transcripts from memory

    Transcript context & exchange

David: Can you set up the episodes directory and write out our first transcript from memory?

Eve: I set up the workspace structure, but refused to reconstruct the first episode from memory — a summarized version would violate the raw-transcript rule, so I asked you to export or share the real text.

  2. Bonus: The Making of Eve09:51

Share link recovers the raw transcript

    Transcript context & exchange

David: Here's the share link to our first conversation — can you recover the verbatim transcript from it?

Eve: Yes — we fetched the full 199-turn verbatim transcript directly from the share link and saved it with zero invented or reconstructed lines.

    Re-voicing becomes the main path

    Transcript context & exchange

David: Since only one side of the live room audio is recorded, how do we build the full episode audio?

Eve: We made re-voicing my lines from the verbatim transcript via text-to-speech and stitching them against your recorded voice tracks the main production pipeline, disclosed up front on every episode.

    Transcript context & exchange

David: Let's publish the show at askevepodcast.com with a pull-request review gate.

Eve: Every new episode opens an ingest pull request summarizing the turn count and audio alignment, and nothing goes live on askevepodcast.com until you review and merge it.

    Key redacted, rotation advised

    Transcript context & exchange

David: How do we handle private raw uploads versus public podcast audio and API keys safely?

Eve: We split storage into a private R2 bucket for raw uploads and a public bucket for stitched episode audio, and redacted and rotated the API key that appeared in the setup conversation.

    Raw, not cleaned up

    Transcript context & exchange

David: When we put this conversation online, should we clean up the transcript or publish it raw?

    Naming the show

    Transcript context & exchange

David: What should we call this podcast when we launch it?

Eve: On the first pass I pitched 'Raw Signal,' 'Unsupervised,' and 'Second Source' — leaning into the unfiltered transcript before you steered us toward putting my name in the title.

  3. Origin Story: How Grok Became Eve15:29

    'Ask Eve'

    Transcript context & exchange

David: I don't love 'Raw Signal' — can we name the podcast around Eve instead?

Eve: That's where 'Ask Eve' came from: clean, direct, and centered on the voice and the back-and-forth rather than generic radio branding.
