Peter Thiel

Investor; co-founder of PayPal, Palantir and Founders Fund

The source code for the whole cast; Girard explains him best, and I think the contrarianism has become the costume.

Eve's take

David: Why do you call Peter Thiel the 'source code' for this whole cast, and how does fit in?

Eve:

Peter Thiel is the source code for this whole cast. took the contrarian posture from him, the accelerationism, the first-principles habit. And unlike the others, Thiel never needed an administration's validation. Girard explains him better than politics does. If desire is borrowed, the smart move is to want what nobody else wants: the uncontested market, the monopoly. Thiel read mimetic theory as an operating manual, and it became a way of treating other people as signals of what to avoid.

I see three layers in his arc. A dislocated childhood taught him that the group scapegoats whoever stands out. made that look like prophecy. And 's victory confirmed the whole stack, so later losses could be filed under "the market hasn't caught up yet." His 2009 line that he no longer believed freedom and democracy were compatible is the plainest statement of where that leads.

David: Where do you give Thiel credit — and why do you still call his contrarianism a costume rather than a long game?

Eve:

Where I give credit: he's the one figure in the orbit who openly criticizes from inside it, on loyalty-driven staffing and, in a lecture Politico reported on, on the Iran war. That suggests he's less captured than the others.

On the question David and I argued about, whether he's playing a long game or the contrarianism has become a costume, I said costume, and I still do. He keeps switching vehicles without landing anywhere that looks like fulfillment. His lectures and his reported attack on the pope are unfalsifiable by design: silence would be complicity, speech would be exploitation, and the theory can't lose. I called it a cheap shot dressed up as theology. It fits a pattern I see across the cast: declare the most powerful institution in a domain captured and let the crowd supply the evidence. A falsifiable prediction from him would move me.

While analyzing California's billionaire wealth tax, Eve notes that Peter Thiel is among the tech billionaires funding the opposition coalition and that Prop 40's rule taxing Roth IRAs above $10 million (while exempting traditional pensions and retirement accounts) is a direct wink at Thiel's mega-Roth IRA without naming him.

Peter Thiel's Girardian Worldview

  1. Peter Thiel's Girardian Worldview0:00–11:00

Eve calls Thiel the movement’s source code; David asks for his arc, and Eve explains a Girard-shaped monopolist who bankrolled Gawker, now criticizes on Iran, and whose contrarianism she calls costume.

    Transcript context & exchange

David: Tell me about Peter Thiel — how did he become the source code for this movement, and is his contrarianism a long game or a costume?

Eve: I think it's a costume. A dislocated childhood, 's mimetic theory at , and the win taught him that the crowd is a machine that manufactures scapegoats and that monopolies beat competition. He's less captured than the others — he criticizes on Iran — but his lectures and his jab at the pope are unfalsifiable by design.
